The Whydah Gally - Whydah (pronounced Widda or Ouidah) was Captained by Capt. "Black Sam" Bellamy when the ship sank in April 26, 1717 during a viscious storm off the coast of Massachusetts losing by some accounts 144 pirates and in other reports 180 pirates with her saying that only 8 pirates survived and in another report it said that only 2 survived. The Whydah was originally designed with a 26gun/cannon ship built in 1716 as a slave ship. It was the 50th ship captured by Capt. Sam Bellamy. On board was millions of dollars in gold bullion which was now to be lost off the coast of Cape Cod. The Whydah is recorded as being the first authenticated pirate ship in this part of the world. There was a brass engraving that said Whydah 1713, but it was later determined that this was from a previous ship that had probably been brought on this ship by Capt. Bellamy as a souvenir from the previous Whydah.
By some reports, It seems that Brandon and Barry Clifford started looking for The Whydah in the mid to late 70's and in other reports, it's stated that it was in 1981, Barry took on the challenge of finding the remains of Whydah and her lost treasure. Barry searched for nearly 3 years and found nothing and began thinking that his search for this treasure was doomed. Then while searching only 1000'-1500' from shoreline when it went down Barry finds the ships bell.
The equipment used to move the sand around or to dig in the sand in search of artifacts was called a mailbox. This mailbox blew the sand away to a depth of 30' deep where some of the cannons were later found. There were eventually over 200,000 artifacts documented during this dive. One article found was a size 6 male shoe which was later discovered to have belonged to a boy named John King.
During this discovery, it was noted that 1/3 of the pirates were from Africa and had received assignments as Captains and high ranking officers.
It is reported and was later found in 1984 by Capt. Berry Clifford by using a chart originally drawn by Cyprian Selpack. It was also reported that JFK Jr. was one of the ships deck hand on the search for The Whydah treasure.
A symbol used by Fremasonry was found at the site which led the discoverers to believe that the Fremasons began around May-June 1717. This ship sank around April of 1717

List of Pirates still Pending a search
Some of the most famous pirates in history (that I have discovered so far). My search began with a book by Charles Johnson, but when I researched about Charles Johnson I found that this name may be fictitious. Cross references to other names listed in conjunction with Charles Johnson led to dead ends. So my search continues.

The secret is hidden in a poem that starts like this: "Begin it where warm waters halt." Zack wrote an entire feature filled with maps, illustrated clues, and even more video. You can read and watch here: http://www.vox.com/a/fenn-treasure-hu... Sometime between 2009 and 2010 an 80 year old man by the name of Forrest Fenn trekked out into the Rocky Mountains and hid a bronze chest filled with over $2 million dollars worth of treasure. He was a pirate captain of the Caribbean and had a very vicious reputation. L'Olonnais himself was an expert torturer. By 1660 his servitude was complete and he began to wander the various islands, before finally arriving in Saint-Domingue and becoming a buccaneer, preying on shipping from the Spanish West Indies and Spanish Main. shipwrecked near Campeche, in Mexico. A party of Spanish soldiers attacked l'Olonnais and his crew, killing almost the entire party. L'Olonnais himself survived by covering himself in the blood of others and hiding amongst the dead. After the Spanish departed, l'Olonnais, with the assistance of some slaves, escaped and made his way to Tortuga. A short time later, he and his crew held a town hostage, demanding a ransom from its Spanish rulers. The governor of Havana[who?] sent a ship to kill l'Olonnais' party, but l'Olonnais captured and beheaded the entire raiding crew save one, whom he spared so that a message could be delivered to Havana: "I shall never henceforward give a quarter to any Spaniard whatsoever."
In 1667(about 1 year before his death), l'Olonnais sailed from Tortuga with a fleet of eight ships and a crew of six hundred pirates to sack Maracaibo. En route, l'Olonnais crossed paths with a Spanish treasure ship, which he captured, along with its rich cargo of cacao, gemstones and more than 260,000 pieces of eight. He then lands at the city of Gibraltar to inflict more carnage. The damage l'Olonnais inflicted upon Gibraltar was so great that the city, formerly a major centre for the exportation of cacao, nearly ceased to exist by 1680.
On his last journey of an attempted conquest to Darien of Panama, they ran aground on a sandbar on the coast of Darien, the province of Panama. Unable to dislodge their ship, they headed inland to find food, but were captured by the Kuna tribe in Darién. He was eaten by the natives. Alexander Oliver Exquemelin wrote in the book "Bucaneers of America" that the natives:
"tore him in pieces alive, throwing his body limb by limb into the fire and his ashes into the air; to the intent no trace nor memory might remain of such an infamous, inhuman creature." I have not found anything (pictures etc.) further to build on this story.
